About Us
And so it began…
Women In Vision held its first conference in a retreat in the beautiful town of Warkworth in 2022. A gathering of inspiring female ophthalmologists and trainees, opened up about empowerment, gender discrimination and well-being in a safe and inviting atmosphere.

The conference was attended by women who were well-established in their careers and those who were starting out. The atmosphere was unlike any other conference in this industry. Here are some of the comments we received after the conference.
-
"The whole event was supportive and enriching, with tools to improve work-life balance"
-
"I will be more likely to seek support from and offer support to other women in future. Inspired by speakers, especially Margi and Renee, to consider important life changes"
-
"I have gained confidence in career and life decisions"
-
"I feel empowered to do what is best for me and my family rather than what I think others/the college/supervisors/the man thinks I should do. I feel more confident to take up space!"
-
"Obtaining career and department ideas/advice, gaining perspective on how things are done elsewhere in the country, feeling supported by like-minded individuals"
-
"Injection of enthusiasm and inspiration. Started important taboo conversations"
-
" One of the few ophthalmology conferences I am going to come back to".
Moving Forward …
We are holding another conference, catering to a broader audience while maintaining the intimate atmosphere and non-judgmental safe space that made the previous event successful.
The aim is to continue fostering personal learning and development while supporting participants. This year, optometrists and other medical professionals are invited to participate.

2024 Innovation & Influence،
Women Driving Change
The upcoming conference will have a FemmeFocus, with an approach and perspective that strongly emphasises the importance of women's experiences and perspectives. Our goal is to recognise and prioritise the experiences and perspectives of women within our domain.
There will be a variety of topics – but some of the areas we want to focus on are:
-
Navigating the Negotiation Table
-
Financial Planning for Visionary Women
-
Relationship Resilience
-
Sisterhood Synergy
-
Empowerment
Speakers
We understand the importance of engaging high-calibre speakers who are experts in their fields. We are committed to featuring successful women from various industries, including finance, negotiation, and other work/life skills aspects.
We are pleased to announce that Professor Erin Shriver, Chair in Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, has agreed to be one of our keynote speakers. Although her expertise is in ophthalmology, we believe her professional experience will significantly benefit our participants.

Queenstown
The Heritage Hotel in Queenstown will host the 2024 conference from Thursday, 28 November, to Saturday, 30th. The venue is easily accessible from major cities, and participants from Australia can easily travel there.
The stunning views and atmosphere of the venue are critical in encouraging participation and creating a friendly environment, which is essential for the conference's success.

Who will come?
As mentioned, we are expanding participation to optometrists and other medical professionals this year. Our target audience will be professionals based in New Zealand and Australia, and we aim to have 150 participants.
As in 2022, we will seek endorsement from STONZ and RDA (we succeeded in 2022).
Our goal is to benefit medical practitioners and our patients by creating communication channels between women at different levels, regions, and sub-specialties.
Additionally, we aim to engage with female fellows, including non-trainees and specialists, from an early stage in their training, offering support and empowerment.
Sponsorship
We seek support to ensure the conference's continued success, which is expensive and time-consuming.
The Eye Institute has generously agreed to continue its support as the Platinum Sponsor. A sponsorship pack with various levels of support has been developed.
